Niranam Thrikkapaleeswara Temple, one of the ancient temples of Kerala is being renovated. The Devaprasna under the supervision of Sri Thrikkunnappuzha Udayakumar revealed that the dilapidated state of the temple has adversely affected the progress and prosperity of the land and its people. The renovation of the temple will definitely cause an increase in the bounty of the land.

The temple is the abode of Dakshinamorthy, in whose inherent grace abounds knowledge and prosperity. The renowned scriptural scholar and temple architect Brahmasri Kanipayyoor Krishnan Namboothiri visited the temple and drafted a plan of the temple complex. He instructed that the renovation should begin from the sanctum sanctorum. Lord Ganapathy and Lord Sastha are to have their holy abodes above the Sreekovil and a temple is to be built for Sree Krishnaswamy. It was also instructed that the 'Nagaprathishta' be shifted and a 'Nalambalam' and 'Thidappalli' be re-constructed.

In the first phase of the renovation, as a panacea for the faulty and defiling rituals followed in the temple, earlier a series of elaborate pujas and sanctifications were gracefully conducted. The next step would be to reconstruct the 'Sreekovil' originally built in the erstwhile and unique 'Maalika' tradition. The lower base, now situated in the ancient stone sculpted sanctorum has to be renovated before the upper part can be carved in wood and this is an elaborate and complex ritual. The first phase would be completed with the renovation of the 'Sreekovil', replacement of the damaged 'Peetham' of the 'Sivalinga' and finally the 'Ashtabandha Kalasa'.

Temple History

Of the 108 Siva temples consecrated by Parasurama in Kerala, Niranam Thrikkapaleeswara Temple occupies a prime position. A unique temple, here the bountiful Dakshinamoorthy is the presiding deity. Sitting atop Mt. Kailas, the God who imparts eternal wisdom to the sages is believed to be the Prime Lord of Knowledge.

Thrikkapaleeswara Dakshinamoorthy is believed to have blessed the famed Kannasa poets with the divine boon of learning and thus was written the Kannasaramayanam which laid the corner stare of Malayalam language and literature even before the times of Thunjathu Ezhuthachan. In honour of the great tradition of these epic poets who ushered in the Renaissance in Malayalam, many throng the temple during Vijayadasami to initiate their little ones into the world of letters. Many students and researchers of astrology, traditional architecture and Ayurveda come to the temple seeking the Lord's blessing. Niranathu Sala, one of the erstwhile universities of ancient Kerala had functioned in association with this temple.

This temple has also the distinction of being one of the few temples where Nandikeswaran, the Lord's Celesital carrier has a special abode where regular offerings are made. A number of myths and legends relating to Nandikeswaran's divine presence in the land are in currency among the people even today. Another remarkable feature of the temple is the presence of the centuries old deities of Saptha Mathrankkal.

Today the temple is in the path of renovation and enhanced grace. A spiritual awakening and enlightenment regarding the importance of this project among the people of the land, irrespective of caste or creed, is the reason for this endeavor. The renovation work is progressing under the Kerala Kshethra Samrakshana Samithi under whose auspices a number of dilapidated temples in Kerala were renovated.

Temple Administration

A twelve member committee elected from Kerala Kshethra Samrakshana Samithi, Branch No.2265/05-70 is entrusted with the temple administration. In addition a separate council has also been constituted and entrusted with the task of supervising the renovation work.

Noted Gandhism and freedom fighter Kerala Gandhi Kelappaji, formed the Kerala Kshethra Samrakshana Samithi in 1966. The council seeks to renovate and protect temples besides fulfilling their religious and spiritual objectives which would result in the general prosperity of the land and people. The Samithi follows a six bold action plan of Community worship, Mathru Samithi, Religious schools, Service Activities, Satsangam and Devaswom areas of the temple renovation Committee aspires that the temple should emerge as a religious socio - cultural centre for the local residents creating a clear sense of direction to the spiritual approach of the people and providing material means to educate poor students and take care of their health have been achievements that the temple administration can be proud of.
